Key terms glossary

Definitions of common investment analytics terms — plain English, no jargon.

P/E Ratio (Price-to-Earnings)
A valuation metric that divides a company's share price by its earnings per share. A higher P/E suggests investors expect stronger future growth.
Market Capitalisation
The total market value of a company's outstanding shares, calculated as share price multiplied by shares outstanding.
Dividend Yield
Annual dividends paid per share divided by the current share price, expressed as a percentage. A measure of income return.
Volatility
A statistical measure of price dispersion over time. Higher volatility means larger price swings and is often used as a proxy for risk.
Bull / Bear Market
A bull market is a period of rising prices (typically 20%+ gains). A bear market is a sustained decline of 20% or more from recent highs.
Asset Allocation
The process of distributing investments among different asset classes (equities, bonds, cash, etc.) to balance risk and return objectives.
Liquidity
The ease with which an asset can be converted to cash at a fair price. Highly liquid assets can be bought or sold quickly with minimal price impact.
Compound Interest
Earning interest on previously accumulated interest. Often described as the "eighth wonder of the world" due to its exponential growth effect over time.
